Introduction

In traditional microservices, services communicate synchronously via HTTP (REST/gRPC). If Service A calls Service B, and Service B is down, Service A fails. This coupling limits resilience. Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) flips this model.

What is EDA?

In EDA, services communicate by producing and consuming "events" (e.g., "OrderPlaced", "PaymentProcessed").

  • Producer: "Hey, an order was just placed!"
  • Consumer: "I see an order event; I will update the inventory."
Services don't know about each other; they only rely on the event broker.

Why Apache Kafka?

Apache Kafka is the de facto standard for high-throughput event streaming. Unlike a traditional message queue (RabbitMQ), Kafka is a distributed log.

  • Persistence: Events are stored on disk and can be "replayed" (e.g., resetting a consumer to process old data).
  • Scalability: Kafka partitions data across multiple servers, allowing it to handle millions of events per second.
  • Real-Time Processing: With Kafka Streams, you can process data as it flows (e.g., fraud detection) rather than batch processing it later.

When to Use It?

  • Activity Tracking: Logging user clicks on a massive website (like LinkedIn).
  • IoT Data Aggregation: Collecting readings from thousands of sensors.
  • Financial Transactions: Processing stock trades or payments in real-time.

Conclusion

Event-Driven Architecture introduces complexity, but for systems that need extreme scale and decoupling, it is the architectural pattern of choice.
